Compliance Programs

Ok, so you had a safety audit, your site is hazard free and you have a robust safety training program in place. Is that all?

Certainly not.

Safety is a company-wide commitment and without the proper compliance infrastructure in place your training will in time prove to contributing little to safety in the workplace.

OSHA regulations keep on changing, so does your state and city building codes and health departments legislation. If you aren't continually researching the regulations you should turn to those who do. Staying in compliance is not only the law, it can spare you some major headaches at your next OSHA inspection.

And compliance does equal safety! Old-school rescue techniques are out, CPR of the olden days is now considered harming the patient, and so on. Compliance is not just a corporate responsibility. It is a company-wide shared responsibility. If new hires sign that they will adhere to proper PPE regulations but are not supplied with the proper PPE equipment or if management does not enforce its proper use that can be a problem.

Employees need to feel and breath safety and they need to be under the impression that corporate wants it that way. It's a safety culture, if you will. And that can only happen when a) corporate commits to it, and b) you go about implementing it the right way.

Legend Safety has successfully implemented “safety cultures” at many previously safety-neglected workplaces by embracing a Behavioral-Based Safety training approach (not exclusively) as well as establish Safety Committees, re-write the Corporate Written Safety Plans in an Employee Guidebook fashion and starts its approach by tackling the major issues on the company's OSHA 300 Log.

With safety committees in place there is a method of communicating to evaluate safety and health issues brought up by management or by the representing employee bodies. The result is action before there are hazards or injuries, it's all handled in-house, and the employees see that corporate cares!
